Geertgen tot Sint Jans

(flourished c. 1475–1495, Netherlands, Hapsburg empire) Dutch painter. Little is known of his career. His name means “Little Gerard of the Brethren of St. John,” after the religious order in Haarlem of which he was a lay brother. His only documented work, the large triptych The Crucifixion, was painted for the Brethren's monastery. Paintings attributed to him include a luminous nocturnal Nativity and St. John the Baptist in the Wilderness.
