Buddhist visual art that flourished in the trading and pilgrimage center of Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, India, from the 2nd century BC to the 12th century AD. Standing and seated Buddhas are represented with broad shoulders, large chest, legs apart, and feet firmly planted, conveying a sense of enormous energy. Female figures are frankly sensuous.
